A Holiday Cocktail with Social Wines

0 Comments 04 December 2012

As a part of our Holiday Cocktail Series, we went out into the community to speak with local businesses and individuals whose work we admire, and asked them for their favorite holiday cocktail recipes. Last week, we had the opportunity to visit a newer craft beer, wine and spirits store in South Boston.

A Holiday Cocktail with Social Wines

Social Wines is a beautiful place – clean lines, loads of light, and a very modern yet comfortable vibe. Rows and rows of beer, wine and spirits line the shelves, and you can see the attention to detail paid to each and every aspect of the store’s interior. Reclaimed wood from a barn in Vermont serves as the counter where the register sites, and many of the store’s metal fixtures and shelving units were assembled by a local welder. We were warmly welcomed by owners Chris and John, who had prepared a delightful cocktail to share with us that day.

While I had heard many good things about Social Wines, I myself had never visited, so it was nice to finally explore the space. They emphasize “smaller, independent and family-owned wine makers, brewers and distillers,” which is something I truly admire about their business. As the trend shifts towards more small-batch, craft distilling, brewing and wine-making, it’s so exciting to see another local business supporting that trend, and in turn our local producers. Speaking with Chris and John – who crafted this delicious holiday cocktail – it was clear that they are passionate about what they do!

The cocktail that John picked, called The Lion’s Tail, is a drink that hails from the Cafe Royal Cocktail Book, but is said to have been originally published in the Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails book. It’s base is bourbon, which is spruced up with an incredible allspice liquor, some lime and a touch of simple syrup. I’m not a big fan of bourbon, but I absolutely loved this cocktail. It was perfectly balanced, with notes of sweet, spice and acidity, all of which complemented each other so well. It was the quintessential holiday cocktail, with a spicy warming sensation that lingered after each sip.

The Lion’s Tail
2 oz Bourbon Whiskey
3/4 oz Saint Elizabeth Allspice Dram
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 tablespoon simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, strain into a cocktail or martini glass, and serve straight up.

We’re so grateful to Chris and John and the crew at Social Wines for having us in the share this outstanding cocktail! If you’re ever in the neighborhood (the store is conveniently located off the red line Broadway T stop, and highway 93) – I’d encourage you to stop in for a visit!
