Who You’ll See at the Market this Weekend

No Comments 25 January 2013

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Somerville Winter Farmers Market, as I often do on Saturday mornings throughout the winter. The market sets up shop in the unique and funky Arts at the Armory building on Highland Ave. in Somerville, MA. There, an array of local farmers, food artisans, bakeries and winemakers showcase their products, often offering samples and plenty of friendly smiles to go around.

Farmers To You

We first learned about Farmers To You a few weeks ago, when their sales and communications representative Simeon Chapin stopped into Local Root during a neighborhood visit. He was scoping out the area to secure a new pick-up site for the twice-weekly food delivery program. Once Simeon started telling us about the company, it was clear they’d be a great fit for the area – and we were excited to learn more!

Local Winter Farmers Markets

Now that the winter season is in full swing here in Massachusetts, many folks think that the farmers market season is long gone. But the truth is – there are plenty of local farmers markets that carry on through the winter, with amazing crops of fresh produce, canned goods, and more. We put together a round-up of those in the Greater Boston Area, and hope this will be the perfect cure for those winter blues.

Taste by Boston Magazine

Last week, we had the pleasure of attending Taste, a fantastic culinary event put on by Boston Magazine. This year’s event was held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and featured more than 25 local restaurants and mixologists. (You can see the full list here) Proceeds from the event went to the Greater Boston Food Bank, a local non-profit that is extremely important to our local community, especially at this time of year.

The Mandarin Hotel was the perfect locale for the event – restaurant tables were lined up around the periphery of several rooms, bars were scattered about, and high-top tables were strategically placed for congregating. We were impressed by the quality of nearly every bite we had, and excited to see so many local chefs serving up food themselves at their tables.

It’s hard to give an accurate depiction of this event through pictures, but we did want to share images of some of the fantastic fare we sampled, and some of the libations as well. This is definitely an event we’ll be back to in years to come!

Taste by Boston MagazineThis was the first cocktail we tried – it was full of spices and had a serious kick. Delicious, but not for the faint of heart! Definitely a wonderful fall beverage. Continue Reading
