Herb-Speckled Spaetzle

No Comments 26 September 2013

After a many-months-long hiatus, this past week we finally got back into the “kitchen,” and whipped up a new recipe using some fun new tools at Local Root.

Recently, Local Root hired a new store manager, Kathy, and she and I have had a great time thinking up new and different ways to make the store a success. Just one of those many ideas included the reintroduction of “cooking days” as we call them here, when we take a few minutes away from our desks and the customers, and methodically put together a recipe. These cooking days are most often spurred by something a  customer has suggested, a new cookbook we’ve received, or a kitchen tool that may seem unusual or obscure that we’d like to shed some light on.

Back to School: Quick and Easy Recipes for the Whole Family

2 Comments 20 August 2013

Whether you can believe it or not (we certainly can’t), fall is right around the corner, as is the back-to-school season, the busying of schedules, and the demise of well thought out, delicious and nutritious family meals. As much as you might try, when the school years starts back up and time is of the essence, it’s hard to stick to getting well-rounded meals onto your family’s table morning, noon and night. For today, we’ve compiled a list of relatively simple, tasty, and good-for-you meal options to cover sun-up to sun-down. Even a few sweets made it into the round-up, for those who can’t finish a meal without one (like me).

For Breakfast:

Zucchini Hash with Soft Cooked Eggs from local food blog Delicious Dishings.
This recipe is comfort food at it’s finest, and with just a few simple ingredients it’s easy to prepare but packed with flavor. Use zucchini or summer squash, whatever you have on hand, and perhaps even a sprinkling of chopped bacon if you so choose. Over-easy eggs can be used in place of the soft-cooked eggs for an even easier preparation.

Summer Entertaining Recipe Round-Up

No Comments 19 June 2013

Summer entertaining is definitely the best kind here in New England. Whether you’re dining al fresco or indoors with the windows and doors open, you can enjoy the fresh air, sunshine, and warm summer breeze. When I entertain, I love to serve bite-size foods, or things that can be consumed in one hand with a drink in the other.

The recipes compiled here are meant to please a crowd – meat eaters and vegetarians alike – all suitable for serving as appetizers or small bites, so you can leave that formal dining plan behind. There are even a few sweets at the end, because honestly, what kind of gathering isn’t better with something sweet to bring it all together?

Wherever you are this summer and whatever your dining style, I hope you’ll be inspired by these recipes. Happy Entertaining!

Homemade Crepes

No Comments 26 April 2013

Last week I shared a recipe for homemade pasta, which we made the same day as these crepes.  I picked both recipes for their versatility, and the countless recipes you could come up with using either one as the base. I started the day off by making homemade pasta, a super savory recipe that just ached to be followed by something sweet.
