It’s only once a year that we can break out the red and green check table linens, and adorn our table with a pewter-heavy setting – so we look forward to it with a sense of eagerness and enthusiasm reserved just for the occasion. The holidays are such a joyous time of year – spirits are lifted, there’s a special mood in the air, and decorations abound wherever you go.

We recently hosted a four-course holiday themed dinner, complete with the gorgeous red, green and pewter table you see below. We raided the Didriks store, and put together a stunning table with some of our favorite holiday pieces. We took dinnerware pieces from the Match Pewter Viviana collection, and used a variety of Match stemware and other table accents to finish the table. We also used festive Libeco Home linens to dress up the table even more.

Single Serving Eggnog

eggnog served in simon pearce norwich beakerSure, eggnog is a holiday tradition, but so is fruit cake. Personally, I’ve always liked it, but if that many people really loved eggnog, I think we’d see cartons of the non-alcoholic stuff for sale year round. Most people tend to prefer their alcohol without raw eggs and in my experience, punch bowls, pitchers, and non-alcoholic cartons largely go untouched at Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. This is all not to say that eggnog doesn’t have it’s devotees, those who love its sweet, creamy taste and frothy texture, and who couldn’t imagine Christmas without it. But this is the minority.

If you’re entertaining this weekend, let me caution you against putting out an entire punch bowl of homemade eggnog in an attempt to either please the few or project a guise of being traditional. The majority of your guests will thank you for something lighter like punch, champagne cocktails, or beer, wine & basic spirits.

Eggnog is a drink best made to order. Mixing it immediately before serving in individual portions keeps it colder, frothier, and saves eggs, milk, and booze from your drain pipes. Here’s a quick recipe for a single glass of eggnog that you can mix up for Uncle Chuck, or whomever wants it this Christmas. This December, for our annual holiday dinner, we gathered at Jonathan’s house at a table inspired by the glittering veil of fresh snowfall–although we haven’t had any yet. We set chrome iittala Piano Workshop flatware and light-scattering Kosta Boda Limelight plates on slightly wrinkled white Libeco Home table linen and white Chilewich lattice placemats that sparkle like snow crystals. Like a blanket of fresh snow, the setting was simple and clean, with candlelight from iittala Kivi votives reflecting off the etched patterns in the Kosta Boda plates and the iittala Ultima highballs, with feet like beads of ice. And like the setting, the food provided by JJ Gonson of Cuisine en Locale represented a return to the essentials, with a focus of delicious ingredients and simple, hearty preparation. Chef Robert Harris, owner & chef of Season to Taste Catering, invited us to the new Table at Season to Taste, to sit down to a gourmet farm to table dinner for ten. They’ve recently installed a dining table in their Cambridge kitchen and made it available to small parties for their unique take on private dining. In the returning tradition of table d’hôte, Chef Harris creates a custom prix fixe menu based on the freshest seasonal ingredients, completing the menu with wine pairings.
