Ginger Molasses Cookies

No Comments 22 December 2012

Spicy molasses cookies are my holiday favorite. Ginger molasses, gingersnaps, ginger chews, gingerbread – anything that’s loaded with the warm spices of winter is a total home run in my book. So it was only natural that I wanted to feature this outstanding Ginger Molasses Cookie recipe from the Flour Bakery Cookbook. When possible for this blog, we love to do things locally – so the fact that this recipe comes from a local chef makes these cookies even better.

While these cookies are served in all of the Flour bakery locations year-round, the feel most fitting for the holiday season. They’re thin but not dry or brittle, and instead are ultra-chewy, with the perfect balance of sweet and spice, and plenty of buttery goodness. They are good enjoyed any which way – warm, cold, or at room temperature, as a morning, mid-day, afternoon or evening snack. Continue Reading

Holiday Decorated Sugar Cookies

No Comments 17 December 2012

I think above all others, decorated sugar cookies are the quintessential holiday cookie. Cut into seasonal shapes – gingerbread men, Christmas trees, snowflakes and more – and decked out in bright reds and greens, there is no cookie that better represents this season. I’m generally not a big sugar cookie fan, but around the holidays I can’t get enough of them! They represent a time of year and a season that is very merry and beloved.

The recipe we used for these cookies has a great flavor – super buttery, not too sweet, and crispy but not brittle. If you cook them a bit less, they stay ever so slightly soft in the centers, which is my personal preference. Unlike some sugar cookie recipes, they spread a bit when baking, so they don’t have perfectly defined borders – more soft edges. That’s definitely a feature I love about them! Continue Reading

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

No Comments 08 December 2012

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies are definitely a holiday staple – the powdered sugar almost looks like a light dusting of snow, and they’re a chewy, hearty cookie that feels deliciously satisfying in the dead of winter. With very standard ingredients, they’re an easy thing to throw together on a whim, because you probably already have all of the necessary ingredients in your pantry.

The resulting cookie is ever so slightly crisp on the edges, which yield to a softer, chewy center. They’re an adventure to eat – too big of an inhale or exhale sends powdered sugar flying – but they’re so good it doesn’t matter.

I used this Chocolate Crinkle recipe from All Recipes to make these cookies, and didn’t change a thing. The only part of the recipe I would make a special note of is that the dough really does need to sit for at least 4 hours, otherwise the cookies will flatten too much (see above image for a great example of this!) They still taste just as delicious when they’re flatter, but they keep the sugar coating much better – and also have much thicker, denser centers – when they keep more of a ball shape.

If I were to make these again, I might play around with the addition of some espresso powder, to achieve a bit of a deeper flavor. But if you like chocolate at all, these cookies are for you!

Oatmeal Cranberry White Chocolate Cookies

No Comments 01 December 2012

This time of year, I always have a hankering for some really good cookies. Maybe it’s the permanent chill in the air, or all of the festivities around, or just a general holiday cheeriness, but when I get into the kitchen the first thing I want to do is get to work on some holiday cookies. Cookies are the perfect thing to have around for the holidays, when family is visiting, you want a quick sweet treat, or you want to dole out handmade gifts. They came in so many varieties that it’s impossible to ever tire of them, and they’re pretty to boot!

Oatmeal Cranberry White Chocolate Cookies

To honor this wonderful time of year, we thought we’d share a couple of simple, tasty holiday cookie recipes. We’ll start with these, because while they’re “red” (cranberries) and “white” (white chocolate), they don’t necessarily look the part of a holiday cookie. But fear not – if you served these to your holiday guests, they’ll probably still be asking you next July to make them again and again and again. Continue Reading
