Amidst this New England heat wave, we took some time to cool off with wine and fresh seafood at a friend’s Cambridge dinner table. That friend and loyal Didriks customer is named Marshall, although the kids at Milton Academy probably know him better as Mr. Carter. That’s right, we ate at the principal’s table.

Marshall, being the gracious host that he is, arranged for Benji, who moonlights as a private chef, to come in and take care of the cooking. In his day job, Benji works at Milton Academy dining services. But, he’s not any old lunch-man. He’s responsible for much of the gourmet catering that emerges from the swinging doors of Milton’s kitchens for its many functions & fundraisers. Continue Reading

Most people get their raw oyster fix during happy hour. In Cambridge, some of the best spots are the Legal Sea Foods bar at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square or Rafiki Bistro, halfway between Harvard and Porter Square on Mass Ave. But, as we’ve been discovering recently, they’re a real treat at home too.

The tough shells of these mollusks can be intimidating, especially if you have to shuck a dozen or two for guests. But opening them only takes a kitchen towel, an oyster knife, and a little practice.

This December, for our annual holiday dinner, we gathered at Jonathan’s house at a table inspired by the glittering veil of fresh snowfall–although we haven’t had any yet. We set chrome iittala Piano Workshop flatware and light-scattering Kosta Boda Limelight plates on slightly wrinkled white Libeco Home table linen and white Chilewich lattice placemats that sparkle like snow crystals. Like a blanket of fresh snow, the setting was simple and clean, with candlelight from iittala Kivi votives reflecting off the etched patterns in the Kosta Boda plates and the iittala Ultima highballs, with feet like beads of ice. And like the setting, the food provided by JJ Gonson of Cuisine en Locale represented a return to the essentials, with a focus of delicious ingredients and simple, hearty preparation. For the Savory Table Melissa styled it as buffets. Like the Cocktail Bar she lit them with candles and stuck with her color scheme of black with touches of white and red.

She first covered the small dining table with Libeco Home Vence Linen Tablecloth-69″ Square-Grape and Chilewich Lattice Table Runner-Caviar. The rich purple added just a bit of color to the predominantly black table setting and the lattice runner reflected the candlelight for variety of depth. Continue Reading
