When the days get short, and the nights drop below freezing, the selection of fresh produce plummets. Unlike at the peak of summer when you could stock your entire fridge with local fruits and veggies, in the winter you’re lucky to get your hands on much at all. Root vegetables and dark, leafy greens are the name of the game – but fortunately if you educate yourself a bit, you’ll find that there are a lot of leafy green veggies that actually hit their peak in this season, and with a variety of ways to prepare them they’ll never get old.

For our fifth dinner we partnered with Robert Harris of Season to Taste Catering (winner of Best of Boston 2010), who set up a kitchen in European Country Antiques and served up a delicious fall meal. Below he answers a few questions on the evening’s food as well as his ideas on cooking and serving food. We’re excited about his plans to continue to cooperate with Didriks and the Dinner Series. Dinner 3: Burgers & Beer

For our third dinner we served organic hamburgers, corn-on-the-cob, salad with pea tendrils, bread, cheese, German potato salad, and a celestial bittersweet chocolate mousse.

The Davis Square farmer’s market in Somerville (May-Nov., Wednesdays 12-6 pm) satisfied most of our produce needs for the dinner party. We picked up some of sweetest corn I’ve ever had from the Nicewicz Family Farm and fresh greens for a salad, including some crisp pea tendrils from Flat’s Mentor Farm.

We decided on a simple backyard BBQ for our third dinner. Hamburgers, potato salad, a salad of fresh greens from a local farmer’s market, sweet corn cooked in the husk on the grill, a rich bittersweet chocolate mousse for dessert, sangria, and beer out of the growler from the Cambridge Brewing Company. Here are the recipes and expect more information and photographs.
